Amy's Piano Studio is listed on this compilation of the best enrichment programs for homeschoolers in Orlando!
Piano lessons (and music in general!) are such a valuable part of a top notch education. Check out this list that Playground Magazine put together of other great enrichment programs specifically for homeschoolers.
Experts would agree that there are SO many reasons why taking piano lessons from a young age (or participating in music in general) can be invaluable to the development of a well-rounded education.
Here are my top 5 reasons to sign your child up for piano lessons and/or group music classes this year!
Reason #1 - Piano lessons engage a different part of the brain
As homeschooling parents, you are keen on helping your child get the best education possible. While piano lessons certainly encourage creative thinking, they also help a child to think more critically and detailed. The 'Mozart' effect is well-known. Experts aren't exactly sure why, but by listening to (and learning to play) certain types of music, IQ can increase an astonishing amount. See this article to learn more!
"The Mozart effect is clear evidence that you can alter the brain function and abnormalities with music." – Dr. Michael Trimble, professor emeritus of neurology and neuropsychiatry, University College London
Reason #2 - Piano lessons encourage focus and concentration
In an age where kids (and adults!) are addicted to their smart phones and videos are getting shorter and shorter to cope with decreasing attention spans, learning the piano can be a healthy way to decompress from it all. No matter how gifted you are, it takes time, focus, and concentration to learn the piano. There's no 'quick fix' or shortcut to learning how to play piano. It's a healthy way for a child to spend 20-30 minutes a day and those skills concentration skills transfer over to other aspects of real life as well.
Reason #3 - Playing the piano improves mental health
Playing the piano (or another musical instrument) can be an incredible outlet for improving mental health. When you're playing the piano, your focus can be taken off of yourself and your problems and you can focus on the musical aspects of a piece. Sometimes it seems supernatural how a good practice session can really improve my mood for the rest of the day!
Reason #4 - Piano lessons improve physical dexterity
By playing the piano, you are quite literally becoming MUCH more coordinated in all aspects of life! Music is a highly complicated form of art that is very physical in nature as well. By practicing the piano and memorizing music, so many different parts of the brain are coming together and this affects abilities in sports, speech, and so many other daily functions.
Reason #5 - Playing the piano is FUN
Finally, playing the piano is a wonderful hobby that can provide lifelong enjoyment! Music brings joy to everyone, and being able to play your favorite songs is both good for you and enjoyable. Give your child the gift of music by signing them up for piano lessons!
